ICE Starts War of Words With Oakland Mayor

U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested more than 150 illegal immigrants throughout the week even though Democratic Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf sent out a warning of a possible raid Saturday.

"What she did is no better than a gang lookout yelling police when a police cruiser comes to the neighborhood except she did it to entire community of the this is beyond the pale", Homan told Fox News.

"I know that Oakland is a city of law-abiding immigrants and families who deserve to live free from the constant threat of arrest and deportation", she said, adding that immigration authorities have "used activity rumors in the past as a tactic to create fear".

ICE agents went to the Bronx Criminal Courthouse a few weeks ago to arrest Aboubacar Dembele, following the African immigrant's court hearing to contest an assault charge.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said she has no regrets for warning the public of impending immigration operations and that she would do it again. President Donald Trump has threatened to withhold federal safety grants from sanctuary cities, and on Thursday he suggested withdrawing immigration enforcement agents from California to leave the state on its own in fighting criminal aliens.

"It definitely had an impact on the family and I think intimidated them and the small children inside the home", Weiler said of the incident. The targeting of cities and states that refuse to use their limited resources to fuel the Trump administration's deportation machine is cruel and inhumane.

The new sanctuary law does not preclude local or regional law enforcement agencies from cooperating with ICE. ICE arrested more than 200 people earlier this month in the Los Angeles area.

San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi, who attended a protest outside the agency's San Francisco office, said immigration officials did not respond to his demand that attorneys be allowed to interview people detained in the operation.

John Torres, the agency's director during the end of George W. Bush's administration and beginning of Barack Obama's, said agents generally capture about 40 per cent of people they target in such sweeps.

"These documents show that ICE actions are a direct attack on our organizing and freedom of speech", Villalpando said.

California became a sanctuary state January 1, barring police in most cases from asking people about their immigration status.

Schaaf said she is concerned that this "has been used as a wedge issue and that this ugly myth that immigrants are criminals".

"[At least] 864 criminal aliens and public safety threats remain at large in the community, and I have to believe that some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor's irresponsible decision", Homan lamented.

The mayor also fired back at President Donald Trump, saying, "I hope we take this moment to recognize that we need to fight against the racist myth that the Trump administration is trying to perpetuate, that immigrants are risky".

Mayor Schaaf, this I say to you. "We always have been and we always will be a sanctuary city".

Legal advocates for immigrants say they have confirmed arrests in the Bay Area counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, San Francisco and Santa Clara. We will do everything we can to protect community members from federal abuses of power.

Homan criticized her actions, saying they were politically motivated and endangered ICE officers. "We need to be vigilant and not just turn a blind eye to all the injustices going on right now".
