Kadri tugs at Thornton's beard, Maple Leafs beat Sharks

Thornton squared off with Toronto's Nazem Kadri just two seconds into the first period of Leafs-Sharks on Thursday night, a clearly premeditated big of on-ice violence that indicates the two clearly do not like each other.

Joe Thornton's pre-playoff beard delivered bad karma halfway through the regular season.

Right off of the opening faceoff, San Jose's Joe Thornton and Toronto's Nazem Kadri dropped the gloves for a fight.

One would imagine that didn't exactly feel great for the 38-year-old Thornton, but it's quite amusing to see Kadri casually drop a handful of beard to the ice like he accidentally found a very large dust bunny. "We played a really good game and stuck with it".

Matthews and Tyler Bozak scored for the Leafs in the six-round shootout.

After the 38-year-old Thornton appeared to get the better of Kadri and knock the Maple Leafs center to the ice, Kadri grabbed onto Thornton's beard, ripping out a chuck in the process. I felt he came across with a slash there, then another one, and I gave one back. "I'm playing with some great players who are looking for me to try to get me out of that slump", Kadri said.

Tierney tied it with 1:42 left in the period. "By no means did I expect that". We want that good start tonight.

The Leafs put in a solid effort for the second game in a row, and this time they had something to show for it - at least when it came to goals - after losing 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night.

"I just had to stay patient".

The Maple Leafs opened the scoring with 1:23 left in the first the when Auston Matthews recorded his 18th of the season, redirecting a Connor Carrick point shot through Jones' five hole.
