Haley says United States withholding $255 million aid from Pakistan

Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, called on the worldwide community to speak out on the unfolding protests in Iran, saying the US would seek emergency UN talks on the situation.

"The United States supports the Iranian people and calls on the regime to respect its citizens' basic rights to peacefully express their desire for change", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters.

"I stood proudly even if I was the only hand in the Security Council to fight for the will of the people of the United States", she said.

Haley said the USA will call for an emergency session of the U.N.in NY, as well as at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

"In these first days of 2018, nowhere is the urgency of peace, security and freedom being more tested than in Iran", she said. "Dozens have already been killed".

"We're trying to move for a peace process, but if that doesn't happen, the president is not going to continue to fund that situation", she added.

"We all know that's complete nonsense", she said.

Haley also emphasized that withholding aid is not connected to Pakistan's vote in the U.N. General Assembly stating its opposition to the US recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The State Department has been communicating with protesters through their Farsi-language social media accounts, posting statements of support from USA and world leaders, despite the Iranian government's decision to block access to some websites. The worldwide community made the mistake of failing to do that in 2009.

In the wake of Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a break with decades of U.S. policy, Palestinian officials have boycotted the USA as a mediator, canceling any meetings with United States envoys or diplomats.

"So North Korea can talk with anyone they want but the U.S. is not going to recognise it or acknowledge it until they agree to ban the nuclear weapons that they have".

According to Haley, US President Donald Trump "doesn't want to give any additional funding until the Palestinians agree to come back to the negotiation table".

"However, as I said in December, we won't forget the Jerusalem vote".

Haley also spoke briefly about North Korea, calling United Nations resolutions "a great achievement" but emphasizing that work remains to ensure those resolutions are enforced.

"In recent events, the enemies of Iran united by using different tools in their disposition, including money, weapons, politics and intelligence, in order to create problems for the Islamic system", Khamenei said in comments posted on his official website.
