- A man is accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife and their two children at a Phoenix apartment complex before getting into a Christmas Day shootout with officers, authorities said Tuesday.
Late Monday, after it became clear both children were also dead, police used an explosion to distract the gunman as they entered the apartment, officials said.
Phoenix police communicated with the shooting suspect, who barricaded himself inside one of the apartments.
After arriving at the scene, the officers found the woman outside the building. Several hours later, he indicated he had killed the two children and began shooting at officers.
Officers found two children, ages 11 and 10 months, deceased inside the unit. He says the suspect was pronounced dead Sunday night after being taken to a Phoenix hospital.More news: Jordan Feldstein, Jonah Hill's brother and Maroon 5 manager, dies at 40
Police said that at one point during the ongoing standoff they asked media to stop providing updates because the suspect told them "he is monitoring media and it is agitating him", according to Sgt. Jonathan Howard of the Phoenix Police Department, according to Patch.com.
Several residents waited in parked cars across the street for hours until police resolved the incident. Police say this appears to be a domestic dispute turned deadly.
"It's beyond insane", added resident Gibson Daoud told the Arizona Republic.
"I'm terrified of who our neighbors are", resident Kristen Alexander said.
