Red Kettle Campaign donations down; volunteers crank up the bells


James said the Salvation Army has 50 regular bell ringers on the roster who cover Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village and Mount Prospect. Volunteers say there has been a spike in the number of families seeking help through that program this year.

For a second year, the Salvation Army's annual Red Kettle fundraiser is struggling to meet its goal.

On Saturday, December 16, Walmart Canada will match donations made by individuals to Salvation Army Christmas kettles located in its stores nationwide up to a maximum of $100,000. On Wednesday, the Florence Lions Club donated $3,000 to the Salvation Army to buy bicycles. He hopes the Salvation Army can ease the burden for as many people as possible.

"The Red Kettle donations collected in Door County stay in Door County", Lemkuil said.

For the past two days inside the crowded Salvation Army Church hall volunteers have been busy preparing for next week's Christmas hamper distribution.

In 2016 the Salvation Army helped 16 families with lodging and helped 106 families pay their rent.

The CAP office participates in the statewide effort twice a year to count homeless populations in counties.

"I sit out here like nine hours, 10 hours a day", he said.

"They can see that it's volunteers and employees [asking for donations], so they know their donation is safe", Scroggins said. "It's like a family", said Kathy Dillon. Won't you join us make our goal a reality this year?

"There are people who do that during the winter, too".

"My father started the process years ago in Knoxville he organized the Kiwanis Club to ring the bells and he set an example for me, my brother and my sister", he said.

Police in Dunwoody, Georgia, are working to find a boy who stole a Salvation Army kettle.

"We are solid for food", Wise said.
