Winless Browns fire VP Brown, coach staying

"I want this to be real and clear, the way I know Cleveland and Browns fans can appreciate: Our win-loss record since I became executive vice president isn't going to cut it", Brown said. The Browns have two first-round picks in next year's draft and the team could have as much as $100 million in salary-cap space to help it rebuild. Owner Jimmy Haslam has already said Hue Jackson will remain the coach in 2018, so the incoming general manager will have to be comfortable with Jackson.

Winless thus far this season, the Browns own a 1-27 mark under the watch of Brown, who was hired to run the front office on January 3, 2016. "We have begun the process of having productive conversations regarding leadership of our football operations and will provide further updates when appropriate".

And when that turnaround happens, wherever I am, I will smile - more than a little bittersweetly - and say, to myself, "Go Browns!" Since taking ownership in 2012, Haslam has fired five other football executives and four coaches.

Brown, who was named the team's top executive by owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam during an overhaul following the 2015 season, was relieved of his duties on Thursday, said the person who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the move.

Brown's firing didn't cause any uproar among Cleveland's players, some of whom have been hardened by the constant turnover. Cleveland now sits at 0-12 entering Week 14 of the season.

Brown joined the organization in 2013 and was promoted to VP in 2016.

Brown and Jackson appeared to be at odds over several roster decisions and Haslam figured his best course of action was to end the relationship rather than attempting to fix it.

Once upon a time, a struggling Browns franchise missed on Donovan McNabb. McCarron right before this years trade deadline ended and you have to wonder if that may have played a small role in Haslam wanting to move on from Brown now.
